Milano Salone, one of the largest design exhibitions in the world, takes place in Milan, Italy. Many companies and designers from all around the world come to Milan to take part in this festival of design organized all around the city. This video report introduces Panasonic's exhibit at the Milano Salone 2013. Panasonic's theme was, "Energetic Energies." The architect, Mr. Akihisa Hirata, who designed Panasonic's exhibit for 2 consecutive years, said that he wanted to express the relationship between nature and man or a city vibrant with technology. "YUKA" is a durable, scratch and dirt resistant flooring material, which highlights the natural grains of the wood. "SHUNOU" is a storage system that lets you creatively arrange the storage space. With an endurance of up to 40kg, the system can store books as well as other heavy items. By adding LEDs to the storage system, you can help create a cozy environment. It is said that there are 1.32 billion people in the world who do not have access to electricity. Many rural areas in developing countries still use firewood, dung, and kerosene as a source of light and energy. Each year, 1.9 million people die from smoke inhalation. This death rate is higher than that of malaria or tuberculosis.

Through the "100 Thousand Solar Lantern Project," Panasonic aims to provide 100,000 solar lanterns, which can be charged during the day and used at night, to areas without access to electricity by 2018.

This video introduces how solar lanterns donated to an NGO in Cambodia in 2011 are being used. Please take a look and find out how such a small light can help make people lives better. The video will also make you realized once again how important international cooperation is.

Mrs. Koto works at SHARE, an NGO that provides health services to Asian and African regions. In Cambodia, maternal and child health care is a serious issue. But thanks to the solar lanterns, health care providers can see wounds more clearly, check for bleeding, and altogether give better care.

Mr. Aoki Kenta from the Kamonohashi Project is trying to help prevent child trafficking. One way to help is to provide women jobs at the community factory the project runs. But solar lanterns that light up the working area has helped improved their working conditions.

Mrs. Fukimi Urata from the Association of School Aid in Cambodia helps run literacy schools in rural areas. Cambodia has suffered from wars and internal conflict, and during the Pol Pot era, the education system was destroyed. There are still many children, especially in the rural areas who can't read or write even though they have graduated from elementary schools. This high literacy rate is the root of many problems in Cambodia.

The literacy supervisor, Mr. Bun Pheng explains how illiteracy is at the root of many issues Cambodia faces. [6 min 50 sec]

"For our country to develop, those of us who have had some education must act." says Mr. Bun Pheng, one of the teachers at the literacy school. There are 9 classes being offered at night. The light from the solar lanterns is helping improve the quality of these classes. Mrs. Urata of the ASAC explained, "I often hear students say, 'Learning to read and write has shone a light on our lives and now life seems brighter.' In this sense, light that Panasonic solar lanterns provide serves a very similar role."

Tests are being conducted at Matsushita Memorial Hospital in Osaka, Japan to determine if an Autonomous Delivery Robot for Hospitals--nicknamed HOSPI--can courier critical medicine and samples safely around the facility on its own. To a patient or visitor, an encounter with HOSPI--a polite and friendly robot that looks like a wheeled penguin, with flashing lights and a gesturing computer screen for a face--can feel like a momentary brush with the future. To the nursing staff, however, this securely locked medicine cabinet on the go is an actual lifesaver today. "We expect nurses to be the big intermediary between doctor and patient," explains Chief Nurse Fumiyo Sakai, "but our fuller quality of health care relies on safe automated machinery and processes, so the nurses can focus more attention on bedside support for patients." That means more time with patients, so by taking on the routine errands and other duties that often overload the nursing staff, HOSPI robots increase efficiency and give nurses leeway to provide more enriched medical care to each individual patient.

In Dalian--a vast coastal city of 6.1 million people in northeast China--one is being built from the ground up. Called Dalian Best City, it's a completely new town that envisions a future of greater economic competitiveness made possible by a social infrastructure that values wise management of natural resources as a way of daily life. Panasonic, which has been involved in the planning of Dalian Best City from the early stages, is putting its research, technological knowhow and foresight to work in a "HEMS" (home energy management system), customized for the people of the region. "HEMS will let residents visualize how they use electricity and promote responsible energy management in the home on an ongoing basis," said Tsuneo Kuji of Panasonic's China Eco Solutions team in Dalian.
