[Video]GITEX 2009 has come to an end!

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

October 22, 17:00 - GITEX 2009, which has taken place here at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre for the last 5 days has come to an end, and dismantling of the Panasonic booth is beginning in the various corners. I was a little worried when the exhibition began because there weren't so many people here at first, but the latter half of the exhibition saw a great rise in the number of visitors, and the Panasonic booth became so crowded, it was hard to get past people sometimes.

It was my first time here in Dubai. To me, it seemed like a futuristic city marked with tall skyscrapers. Tonight I am leaving this futuristic city back to normal life in Japan. I have to pack up my stuff here too, so I'd like to say good bye for now. Thank you for reading my entries!

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009At 4:00 pm the last main stage performance for GITEX 2009 took place. The MC of the main stage presentation, Pascal, and the dancers who put on an exciting performance over the last 5 days, as well as the MCs for the "VIERA Link" corner and the models (race queens) from the F1 shooting corner all joined in for this special edition of the main stage presentation. They incorporated comical performances and dances, and also called out the names Panasonic staff who supported the presentation from behind the scenes. The whole team who worked together to make the Panasonic booth at GITEX 2009 a great success commended each other for all the hard work, enveloping the Panasonic booth with a family-like warm atmosphere.

Click on the image to watch the video.

This video offers highlights of the various corners in the Panasonic booth introduced in the blog entries. You can see the products on exhibit and also get a feel for the ambience of the booth with presentations and visitors. You will feel like you are actually taking a walk around the booth, so please take a look and see for yourself!

Educational solutions make classes more intriguing and interactive

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

In this corner, an electronic whiteboard for educational use, the "Elite Panaboard," is on exhibit and a presentation of a class using educational materials is being held. This versatile electronic whiteboard offers various ways to teach classes. You can incorporate photographs, diagrams, video, and audio content by using the "Elite Panaboard" with a projector or wirelessly connected PC. The site of the visitors sitting in the chairs and listening to the presentation really reminded me of a class.

The PC screen is displayed onto the "Elite Panaboard" using a projector and the image projected can be operated or edited using a special electronic pen. With an ordinary projector, you would have to go to the PC to operate and edit the image, but by using the electronic pen, you can conduct the class as though you were using a blackboard, while keeping an eye on how the students are reacting to your lecture. It is as though you can transform the PC screen into a big board and operate it directly with a pen.

Such an advanced way of conducting classes in Japan is still very rare, so thinking that classes were far more advanced in Dubai I asked the staff in this corner if this was commonplace. I learned, however, that classes aren't like this in Dubai either, and that this was a proposal for the future. If Dubai continues to develop and the inner city population increases, more educational facilities will become necessary. Panasonic hopes that these educational solutions will be implemented when this occurs.

I am sure we have all experienced this, but with digital devices if you wait a little longer, you can set up the most state-of-the-art environment. For example, in developing countries, because mobile phones do not require any construction for installation they spread much faster - much faster than the time it takes for fixed-line telephone infrastructure to come into place. Likewise, in Japan, it may take some time to replace existing educational facilities with new ones, but in the Middle East, it may be possible to introduce such an advanced class environment from the very beginning when new schools are built. If classes that interactively use photographs, videos, and wide range of other content become standard here, perhaps children here will be more studious and pay closer attention in class than the children in Japan.

Taking measures against viruses with air purifiers, the Panasonic booth is all prepared to welcome visitors!

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

While walking around the Panasonic booth and doing research for my entries, I noticed that there were many air purifiers placed in various different areas of the booth including the information desk, the FULL HD 3D THEATER, "LUMIX" lecture room, and the office set in the solution corner. The new influenza virus has spread across the world this year. The number of infected people in Japan has risen sharply and this figure is expected to continue to rise around the world in the coming autumn, winter seasons. As such, Panasonic has decided to place air purifiers that generate particulate ions, "nanoe," that effectively neutralize and disinfect the air within the booth as a measure to prevent the spread of influenza.

I asked for more information about the air purifiers and found out that there are also models that humidify and dehumidify, so not only would they be great for particular seasons or for dusty or smoking areas, they would also be useful year round in various many situations.

[Video] Large screens and the power to precisely represent images make display solutions even more appealing

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

The display solutions corner features large plasma display panels for business use. Here, you can find a 103-inch model and the new 85-inch PDP. Because of their size, many people can watch the large PDPs at the same time, so they are often installed at schools and companies for educational and training purposes. Panasonic has also received inquiries from police departments and public institutions.

In the demonstration of the 103-inch PDP a satellite map is displayed on the large screen. You can zoom in or scroll by touching the panel with your fingertips. Since this 103-inch PDP is exhibited in a prominent area facing the main corridor in front of the booth, there is always a crowd of visitors who stop to try it out for themselves after watching other visitors having a go. I also tried it out myself, and I felt a bit homesick when I zoomed in on the map of the area I live, far away from Dubai, in Japan.

The new 85-inch PDP is placed vertically. And on it you will see an image of a woman performing a dance routine - almost in life-size. Because each pixel illuminates, the plasma display panels can be positioned vertically. With LCDs that use fluorescent light as backlights, this is not so easy. PDPs also provide a wide viewing angle, whether it is placed vertically or horizontally, so many people can watch the screen from various different angles. In fact, most of the displays placed vertically in the train stations or airports are PDPs.

Since both the 103-inch and 85-inch models are quite big and heavy, when Panasonic receives inquiries regarding installation, the staff in charge visits the site first to inspect and to confirm how they can carry it in. In some cases the staff had to give up installing the large-size PDP. These were places such as skyscrapers and places with only small elevators. Here in the Middle East, however, there are many affluent people who live in humongous one-story houses, so some people even bought a few 103-inch PDPs for their personal use. I am curious to know what these houses look like and where they've put the 103-inch PDPs.

System Solutions - Another key feature of the Panasonic booth

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Another great feature of the Panasonic booth at GITEX 2009 is the system solutions corner that introduces various devices great for businesses. I can see many buildings under construction from the window of the shuttle bus I take every day to get to GITEX. Dubai, marked with such development, has a wide range of needs, and perhaps there lies great business opportunities. The system solutions corner occupies 1/4 of the space in the Panasonic booth, and there are many products and systems on display. Perhaps the amount of space allocated to the system solutions corner reflects the circumstances here in Dubai.

You will find solutions here that are for specific fields. There are office automation devices such as cordless phones and multi-function printers, as well as devices for schools, hospitals, broadcasting stations, and security, such as electronic whiteboards, broadcasting cameras, and security cameras. Because this corner targets specific fields, I am sure people come to this corner with a certain type of product in mind. The staff in the corner often answer questions and explain the various products, and it seems many visitors spend a lot of time in this corner, too. I also visited the corner a few times to do my research, but the corner was so busy, there was only a limited time to ask questions.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Panasonic’s system solutions recognize the needs of the targeted customers and make holistic proposals with the necessary products and systems. Since the solutions offered focus on specific targets, Panasonic can develop equally specific products that meet their needs. And reflecting such background, there are sets that resemble various situations where the products and systems will actually be used such as the office, classroom, and operating table. Today, which is the last day of GITEX, I would like to mainly focus on the products exhibited at the system solution corner.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

The last day of GITEX 2009 has begun! It’s a clear sunny day and the temperature has continued to rise all morning. It’s a bit humid, but a perfect weather for short sleeves. Laugh or cry, there is only a day left so I will do my best to write my entries!

Ideas that make you "FEEL," "THINK," "KNOW" and "DO" at the "eco station" (2)

Next, let me introduce the "DO" corner at the "eco station."

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

The "DO" corner encourages visitors to become more aware about the environment and to take action by making their own eco declaration. The visitors are given a leaf-shaped card on which they can write down their own eco declaration. You don’t need to write down anything super ambitious. It can be anything, even something that might seem insignificant, but something that you can do every day as part of your routine. This is what I wrote down: "I will make sure I turn off all the lights and to actually sleep in my bed" because I sometimes fall asleep in the living room with the lights on.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Next, you set the card on the scanner and press the button to scan it. Then, a leaf with your eco declaration appears on the screen in front of you. You will see many leaves wrapped around the Earth. Each of these leaves represents eco declarations made by visitors who came to the eco station. Each one may be a small effort, but together they may have great impact. The "DO" corner at the "eco station" helps us realize this, while making us feel like we're playing a game.

You can touch and operate each device displayed in the eco station, but some visitors seemed a little hesitant to give them a go since these devices were unfamiliar to them. Even so, when they saw their handwriting displayed on the screen in the "DO" corner, they seemed a bit embarrassed, but also very pleased.

Panasonic has launched a campaign called the 'eco ideas' experience at various exhibitions and events held around the world to bring the experience offered at the eco station here at GITEX to a great many people. This seems to represent Panasonic's desire to not only share information but also get people to take part and to augment awareness about the ecology together.

[Video] Ideas that make you "FEEL," "THINK," "KNOW" and "DO" at the eco station (1)

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

The "eco station" introduces Panasonic’s environmental vision and eco initiatives, and it also encourages visitors to take part, so that their environmental awareness may be augmented. The station is comprised of 4 corners. The "FEEL" corner helps you become aware of the crisis that the earth is facing and the importance of the environmental issues. The "THINK" corner encourages visitors to think about the environment by answering quizzes. And, the "KNOW" corner introduces Panasonic’s eco activities, while the "DO" corner lets visitors share their own thoughts and encourages them to take action. By walking through the "eco station" in the "FEEL," "THINK," "KNOW," and "DO" order, you can better understand what the problems are and what you can do to help. You can follow the footprints on the floor, which show you the route.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

In this entry, I would like to introduce the "KNOW" corner in detail.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Here in the "KNOW" corner, you can learn about Panasonic’s environmental initiatives. You can learn about the wide range of eco activities that Panasonic is undertaking around the world by operating the easy-to-use touch screen, which will show you illustrations, animations, and videos with a warm, cozy ambience.

I hope what they saw and experienced here with the touch panel and through the various images and information will motivate people to think about the environment.

Blu-ray Disc technology offers long-term storage of up to 50 years

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

The corner introducing Blu-ray Disc technology can be found next to the exhibition on the 7.1ch Blu-ray Home Theater System I introduced in the photo digest. Here, you can learn about "VIERA CAST," which lets you enjoy popular online content by connecting the Blu-ray Disc player to Internet, just like with the "VIERA," as well as BD-R/RE discs used to record video and store data, which are brought to life by Panasonic’s highly-reliable, Blu-ray Disc production technology.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Compared to DVDs, Blu-ray Discs offer a much larger data capacity. Dual-layer 50GB Blu-ray Discs have nearly 10 times more storage capacity than 4.7GB DVDs. In addition, Blu-ray Discs are highly resilient to light and ensure long-term storage, even up to 50 years. I shoot high definition video of my children and their growth and store them on Blu-ray Discs because I would like to keep and cherish important video as long as possible and in good condition.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

A video is being shown In the Blu-ray Disc exhibition corner that expresses such thoughts. The video shows how as time passes, the faces of a newly married couple change with age, but I was impressed that as the man’s forehead became broader even the trees behind them grew older. Although the couple gets older in appearance after 50 years, the image stored onto a Blu-ray Disc remains the same quality as it was at the time they got married. The video well explains how Blu-ray Discs are resilient against deterioration due to aging making them highly reliable and optimal for long-term storage.

The corner introducing Panasonic's home theater system - Blu-ray Discs are popular here in Dubai, too!

Only 2 more days of GITEX 2009 left! But there is more I'd like to tell you about the Panasonic booth, so I will keep writing my entries.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

What I'd like to tell you about first today is the corner introducing Panasonic's home theater system. The 7.1ch surround sound system created with the Blu-ray Disc player is showcased here. This corner has been designed to resemble a living room with a sofa and coffee table, and you can have a fantastic audio experience with speakers placed in optimum positions.

As I mentioned in yesterday's entry about the environment in which people in UAE watch TV, the HD broadcasting here is analog, so people here only get to watch digital full HD imagery when they watch Blu-ray Disc software. The Blu-ray Disc movie software cost anywhere from 90 AED to 185 AED (24.50 USD to 50.50 USD based on today's rate which is 1 AED = .27274 USD), so I was told that it is relatively expensive, but the Blu-ray Discs are popular nonetheless.

A lecture on how to take better photographs with the digital interchangeable lens camera, "LUMIX G series"

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

In one section of the "LUMIX" corner, there is a classroom like environment with desks and chairs. A lecture on the "LUMIX G series" is being held here welcoming a professional photographer as the speaker. Each participant can take part while actually operating an "LUMIX GF1" loaned during the lecture. When I went to take a look the class was full, and I saw some people listening to the lecture from outside the glass partition.

The lecture focuses on how to take better photographs. So you can learn about technical aspects such as how to set the ISO settings, how to use flash when taking pictures of people, and the mindset with which you may want to take photographs, such as "select a theme first, and then take pictures." The tips mentioned in the lecture are not too technical or too difficult to understand. The lecturer explained, "You just have to pay a little attention to detail, and keep a few things in mind when you take photographs."

I recall a photographer saying, "You should have a theme when you take photographs" on a Japanese TV program I watched recently. Even though you may be from different countries, perhaps you come to the same conclusion when you decide to pursue photography.

[Video] With high definition camcorders, you can very easily shoot HD video

I told you about the display with an oil painting and golden lamp in the entry I wrote the day before the exhibition began. This is the HD camcorder corner. Let me introduce some of the other unique displays I found in this corner.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Please look at the photograph. Do you know why this display is here? The adjacent panel describes how "even at 70x high magnification zoom, the camcorder offers a blur-free stable image." You will also find a photo of the moon’s surface shot with 70x optical zoom camera. 70x optical zoom is quite impressive in itself, but I amazed by the fact that it also comes with an optical image stabilizer that prevents images from turning out blurry due to shaky hands. Unfortunately, you can’t shoot the moon from here; it is still daytime, and this hall has a covered roof. That is why I thought that Panasonic has created this model of the moon, but when I looked up, I found a moon hanging over the booth! This way, you can really experience the power of 70x optical zoom.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009This is the model of the moon hung from the ceiling to illustrate the power of 70x optical zoom. Although you can’t see it in this photo, there are also astronaut figurines on the surface of the moon.

Click on the image to watch the video.

Intriguing displays found at the "LUMIX" and HD camcorder corner. It is fun just looking at them as they are very decorative and elaborately arranged. Let me introduce them to you in a short slide-show like video.

[Video] High performance, multi-functional "LUMIX" technologies

IFA 2009, held last month, was the first exhibition I reported on and I still remember how much I enjoyed the elaborately designed "LUMIX" and high definition camcorder corner there. You can enjoy similar exhibits here in GITEX. I would like to introduce some of the displays here that have been designed with a playful spirit that well complements the distinctive functions of the digital camera "LUMIX."

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

First, this corner explains the features of the new optical image stabilizer, "POWER O.I.S." that minimizes blurring from shaky hands even when shooting darker scenes. To reproduce a situation where images become blurry due to shaky hands a "LUMIX" digital camera has been set on a shaking platform. The image seen through the finder is displayed on a large screen placed above this corner. The device shakes substantially, enough to be quite visible, but you can see that the image you see through the finder is not blurry at all. You can see how powerful the new image stabilizer is.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Today, compact digital cameras are expected to have face detection. But "LUMIX" has taken it a step further and employed the "Face Recognition" function, which gives priority to and focuses on individual's faces that have been registered on the camera. In this corner you can test the "Face Recognition" function and experience the convenience it offers for yourself. For example, in this party scene, when the man appears from the background the "LUMIX" gives him priority and focuses on his face. Because his face was pre-registered, the "LUMIX" found his face from among the crowd.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

"AF Tracking" function is introduced in this corner with a miniature model train in motion. Once you focus on a subject and lock in on it, the "AF Tracking" function automatically tracks and keeps the subject in focus even when it is in motion. I tested it out myself - when I locked the focus on the miniature model train, it kept the moving train in focus. This function will be great for taking clear, blur-free photographs of active subjects like children or pets.

The same train miniature is also used to introduce the "AVCHD Lite." "AVCHD Lite" is a format that lets you record high definition video onto various media, including an HDD and memory cards, so now you can easily shoot HD video with "LUMIX" compact digital cameras such as the TZ7. You can also enjoy beautiful HD video on a large screen just by inserting the SD Memory Card into the SD card slot of the "VIERA." "LUMIX" also offers easy operability, which lets you start shooting HD video by a push of a button even while the camera is in normal picture taking mode.

Each exhibit has been elaborately designed employing unique motifs and settings such as a flamingo or a birthday party, so that you can see and test out the various functions for yourself. This way you can get a better feel for the various functions. Even if you think you forgot the functions introduced here, it will be easy to recall if you think, "Ah, it's the function that was introduced on the set with a flamingo!"

[Video] Get the best shot you can! F1 shooting corner

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

What has a special presence in the Panasonic booth is the "LUMIX" and HD camcorder corner with a replica of a F1 racing machine. Here, you can test out the various "LUMIX" digital cameras and HD camcorders by shooting images and video of the F1 racing machine, which is from the Panasonic Toyota Racing team that Panasonic sponsors. Although it is a replica, the racing car has been very elaborately built, so to me (an amateur when it comes to automobiles) it looks just like the real thing.

Companies from the Middle East sometimes become sponsors of major F1 teams, and so there is a long-established relationship between F1 and this region. Next month in November, the "F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix," the last grand prix of the year, will be held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE. Perhaps this is due to the popularity of F1, but there is quite a lot of F1 racing machine related content being featured here at the Panasonic booth, i.e. main stage presentation, 3D images aired in the FULL HD 3D THEATER.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

And in this corner, you will also be able to watch a presentation on the "LUMIX" and HD camcorders performed by a male MC dressed like an F1 racer and 2 models (race queens). Models add glamour of the grand prix to this showcase, and many visitors are taking photographs and video of the models with the F1 racing machine, as though they are at the actual grand prix.

The Panasonic booth was featured in an English newspaper!

A large photograph of the Panasonic booth and its description were featured in the major local English newspaper, the GULF NEWS. The article describes how Panasonic has been the first to offer a FULL HD 3D THEATER experience in its booth, and also introduces the PDP technology that has helped make this possible and the next generation prototypes such as LCD TVs that use LEDs as backlight.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009The performers of the stage presentation seemed very excited this morning to have seen a great shot of themselves make the morning news. It's funny how although I have seen the performance take place right in front of my eyes and it has left me awestruck, being featured in a newspaper like this adds a new level of admiration.

[Video] Very popular at GITEX as well! The FULL HD 3D THEATER

The third day of GITEX 2009 has begun. There were fewer visitors right after the exhibition began, so at times it felt a bit lonely, but now the number of visitors seemed to have multiplied manifold.

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

You can especially see that this is the case at the FULL HD 3D THEATER. The entrance area has enough space so that when it gets crowded there can be 2 lines of people, but there are so many people there, they almost overflow from the Panasonic booth. There were people who asked the staff there, "How many glasses do you have?" checking to see that they can get in and watch the next screening before getting in line.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

I had a feeling that it would get very crowded soon, so I went and experienced the theater on the opening day and yesterday. A total of 3 times! The footage shown is same as the one screened at IFA 2009, containing images of the F1 racing machine speeding around the circuit, the mass games performance at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, alpine skiing scenes shot in Vancouver, and the trailer from the movie, "AVATAR."

Because I watched it many times, by the third time I could afford to watch the reactions of people watching the FULL HD 3D with me. For example, with the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, although they did not scream with excitement, (I couldn't see their eyes because they were glasses but) the visitors had big smiles on their faces and seemed blown away by the footage. And when watching the alpine skiing scene, some people involuntarily reacted to watch they were seeing, i.e. when the skier passed by or to dodge the snow.

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

Before the screening begins, you will see a video explanation of the FULL HD 3D technology, but there were people asking the staff questions like, "What size is this display?" "When will it become available?" So it seems that people in Dubai also have a keen interest in FULL HD 3D.

[Video] The ever-evolving "VIERA" technology (3) - Eco technology

You can learn about the latest technologies incorporated in the ever-evolving "VIERA" in the "VIERA TECHNOLOGY" corner. Let me introduce the exhibits on eco technologies of the "VIERA."

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

This corner introduces exhibits that help you understand at a glance the superb energy saving performance of the "VIERA." There are 3 "VIERA" TVs displayed in this corner. The 2 on the left are plasma display panels and the 1 on the right is an LCD. They are displayed with devices that measure their power consumption, and you can see how the power consumed changes in accordance to the image shown on the screens. With plasma panels, brighter the screen, higher the power consumed. Similarly, when darker images are displayed, the power consumed decreases. Comparing the difference in the traditional plasma display panel on the left and the one in the middle with double the luminance efficiency, you can see how although the same images are displayed on both screens, the one in the middle only consumes about half of the power as the one on the left. You can really see very clearly that the luminance efficiency has doubled.

When the staff turned off the plasma display panels, the power consumed went down to "0." They did so using the remote control, so the main power supply was still on, and ordinarily you would assume that the plasma display panel would be consuming power while on standby, but I was surprised to see that they hardly use any power even on standby.

The panels nearby also explain the various features of the "VIERA" that make it people and eco friendly. Here, you can learn about how Panasonic’s plasma panels have achieved a life span of approximately 100,000 hours and how even if you watch it for a long time, it doesn't strain your eyes as much. For a second, I wondered why information regarding technologies that are people-friendly or the product life span is introduced here in the "ECO-FRIENDLY" corner, but perhaps the word "ECO" has a broader meaning for people here.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

This is the device that measures the power consumption. If you push the button, it switches between the length of time the "VIERA" has been turned on since the doors opened for the day, and the total amount of electricity consumed. Seeing the total power consumption may make you think about the cost of power consumed, as well as the impact this may have on the environment.

High performance, multi-functional "LUMIX" technologies

In the "VIERA TECHNOLOGY" corner you can learn about the latest technologies of the ever-evolving "VIERA." In this entry, let me tell you about the technologies embedded in the "VIERA" LCDs.

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

In this corner, you can learn about the IPS alpha technology used in "VIERA" LCDs. An LCD embedded with the new IPS alpha panel is exhibited along side a traditional LCD model. On them you can see images of a ball bouncing around or scrolling landscapes (these images were scrolled from left to right and diagonally). With the LCD embedded with the new IPS alpha panel, there is hardly any ghosting or blurriness even when the images are scrolled. I could clearly read the letters on the signage that appears in the image of the town even when the image was scrolled diagonally.

LCDs are said to have poor performance when it comes to displaying fast moving images, but the IPS alpha panel with a 100Hz drive enhances its performance and reduces ghosting by increasing its frames per second (fps) to 100fps. This is referred to as "double speed drive." The "VIERA" LCDs offered in Japan have a 120Hz drive because the broadcasting format is NTSC in Japan with 60fps, and the LCDs offered in Dubai have a 100Hz drive since the broadcasting format here is PAL with 50fps. The LCDs embedded with the new IPS alpha panel will let you enjoy high-speed sports without any stress.

You will also find a prototype of the next generation LCD employing LED as backlights. In the images of fireworks shown on the screen, the color of the darker parts of the night sky is a really deep black, perhaps better described as being "jet-black," enhancing the bright colors of the fireworks. Even when a map is scrolled horizontally, you can clearly see the text and lines on the map; there was hardly any ghosting, and the map remained clear and legible. Since this LCD is a prototype, detailed information isn't available yet, but I am looking forward to its development in the future.

[Video] The ever-evolving "VIERA" technology (1) – NeoPDP

You can learn about the latest technologies of the "VIERA" that continue to evolve in the "VIERA TECHNOLOGY" corner. First of all, let me tell you about the NeoPDP technology.

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

Here, the 3 features, "BEST FOR GAMING," "BEST FOR SPORT," and "BEST FOR MOVIES," are introduced using 3 "VIERA" V series TVs that are embedded with the NeoPDP technology.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

To illustrate that the NeoPDP is "BEST FOR GAMING," the screen is split vertically, in two, and images of a car racing game are displayed. This introduces the superb response to moving images the "game mode" realizes. You can see the difference in the response time when the "game mode" is turned on and off. There is definitely a delay when it is turned off. And if there is a delay in displaying the content on the screen, you would be playing and responding to delayed content, so even if you think that you have sent commands in synch to the displayed images, the gaming console would think that you have responded late. With racing games for example, the gaming console would think you have turned the handle late, and as a result you might crash into the wall. This is hardly an optimal gaming experience. The "game mode" has been tuned so that gaming content, which uses a lot of CG, can be reproduced in vivid, clear color. I really suggest that the core gamers out there get a NeoPDP. In fact, in some stores you may find the "VIERA" TVs displayed together with gaming consoles.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Images of a football match are used to illustrate why the NeoPDP is "BEST FOR SPORTS." The NeoPDP, which realizes fast moving image response of 1080 lines brought to life by the 600Hz drive, can display even dribbling and shoot scenes clearly without much blur. And even when watching images with subtitles, I found it easy and comfortable to read the text.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Next, to explain why the NeoPDP is "BEST FOR MOVIES," a panel introduces how Panasonic's NeoPDP has been certified by THX Ltd. The "THX" logo is also displayed on the screen of the "VIERA" V series exhibited here. THX Ltd. checks the quality of images to make sure that they meet the high audio-visual standards optimal for movies that have been established by the film production company, Lucasflim Ltd., founded by George Lucas. Movie theaters and AV equipment for homes that fulfill the THX standards may use the "THX" logo. What this means is that NeoPDP can reproduce images in a way and at the level of quality intended by film directors or producers. The NeoPDP "VIERA" series that have been certified by "THX" have the right to use the logo is the V series exhibited here and the Z series that are only 1 inch thick. It also talks about how the high contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 realizes crisper, sharper blacks in darker scenes, giving way to a richer expression. The screen displays movie scenes and images of outer space as well as CG images with sharp contrast.

It seems that a TV is no longer a mere tool for watching TV broadcasts. Demand for TVs that let you enjoy footage of specific genres with more beautiful images seems to be increasing. This is represented here by content such as games, sports, and movies. I believe NeoPDP will not only meet our needs, it will surpass our expectations.

With enhanced connectivity, the "VIERA Link" offers greater enjoyment

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

A presentation of the "VIERA Link" is held on the sub-stage, which is located right across from the main stage. Two MCs – 1 male, 1 female – appear on stage to introduce with great enthusiasm how you can connect "VIERA" with various HD products using an HDMI cable without complex wiring and how you can operate the various equipment with the remote control of the "VIERA."

After the male MC asks, "What do you do with the photos you’ve taken with digital camera?" the 2 MCs demonstrate how the "VIERA IMAGE VIEWER" lets you enjoy digital photos stored on an SD Memory Card on the large screen "VIERA." The visitors watch the demonstration, which shows how a photo can be displayed on the large screen by simply inserting a small SD Memory Card into the SD card slot of the "VIERA," with great interest.

The "VIERA CAST," which lets you access "YouTube," a video sharing website and "Picasa," a photo sharing website, is also popular according to the staff here. YouTube seems to be particularly popular. "VIERA CAST" offers new enjoyment by making it possible for you to easily and comfortably watch online video content on a large screen TV rather than on a PC as we have been doing in the past. You can also watch the content anytime you want without having to wait for the PC to start up.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009The remote control of "VIERA" is displayed in front of the stage. It looks just like an ordinary remote control, but…
GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009It is actually this big! You would think it is just a stage prop wouldn't you? This gigantic remote control actually works and was used to operate the "VIERA" TVs on the back of the stage during the demonstration of "VIERA IMAGE VIEWER." May be they used a big remote control on stage rather than one that is smaller to let the audience see the buttons better. In any case it is very well made. I tried pushing the buttons, but it clicks, just like the real one. Wouldn't it be fun if you had one in your home?

The fruits of NeoPDP technology - the very impressive 150-inch plasma display and the stylish Z series

In the NeoPDP corner you will find the world's largest, 150-inch plasma display panel and the one-inch thick "VIERA" Z series.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

On the 150-inch plasma display set up on the wall, you can watch images of nature, animals, trains, and luxurious items. The images displayed here are same as those shown at IFA 2009, so I should already be familiar with the images, but I am still blown away. I stood there for a while unable to look away. There is a partition bar about 2 meters in front of the 150-inch plasma display panel, so I couldn't get any closer, but when I went right up to the bar, my whole vision was filled with the images displayed on the 150-inch screen. Because the images are big, it seems more like I'm experiencing the image with my whole being rather than just watching it. So it feels to me like the 150-inch NeoPDP is a mysterious display you not only see, but you can also experience and feel.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Right next to it you will find the "VIERA" Z series, which boast an ultra thinness of approximately one-inch. The platform on which the Z series is showcased turns approximately 45 degrees to show the visitors just how thin it is. Although there is a slight difference in thickness where it is just the screen and where the speakers are, it really looks like a flat plank of wood. With the Z series, it's almost like you're hanging a picture on the wall. It really gives you more freedom to layout your room. When the flat screen just came out, it was often talked about as a "TV you can hang on walls," but perhaps we can call the Z series "TVs that belongs on walls."

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

And on the wall, you can see how the plasma display panels have evolved over the years, and the future technologies many people have high expectations for. The displays that used to be called "flat screens" are now only one-inch thin, and are evolving to a thickness of 8.8mm. The luminance efficiency has evolved from double to triple, leading to great energy savings. Moreover, the picture quality has become even more enhanced over the years. It now has a fast moving image response of 1080 lines. And the next big step that many are waiting longingly for is "FULL HD 3D." It is now within our grasp. The rapidly evolving plasma display panels not only offer high resolution, it also has the potential to change our lifestyles offering new comfort and energy savings.

Watching TV in Dubai

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

There is a constant flow of visitors in the corner introducing the "VIERA" line-up. "VIERA" TVs are the face of the Panasonic booth, and many visitors have a keen interest in these products. So what is it like to watch TV here? I asked the Panasonic staff in charge of the Middle East region what the broadcasting environment is like in United Arab Emirates (UAE), so let me share the insight I've received.

First of all, people in the Middle East seem to mainly watch cable TV. Some people have satellite, but homes that are being newly built or new TVs seem to focus on cable TV. With satellite, you can sometimes receive European broadcasting signals, but this, I was told, is illegal.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

So are people in the UAE watching TV in high definition? There are some HD channels on cable TV but the signal is analog HD. This is also true for satellite broadcasting. That is why, unlike Japan, you can rarely watch digital full HD in UAE. You can watch only digital HD when you buy Blu-ray Disc software and watch it on the Blu-ray Disc player.

I also asked about TVs. When you watch cable TV or satellite broadcasting, you usually need a separate tuner, so there is demand here for TVs with embedded tuners, but there is also demand for TVs without embedded tuners. That is why the 103-inch and the new 85-inch screens without tuners are made available to the consumers here as well.

The demand for thinner, flat screens in Japan seems to be calming down a bit in Japan, but in the Middle East people still prefer to purchase thinner TVs. In the corner introducing the "VIERA" line-up in the Panasonic booth you will find the ultra-slim Z series as well as other series where the slimness is not being communicated accentuated as much, but there are some people who go around to the side and back of these TVs to check out their profile. Moreover, each time when Panasonic unveils a new model for the "VIERA," people always ask, "How thin is it this time?"

The most popular sizes in UAE are 42-inch and up. Perhaps this is because people here have bigger sizes than in Japan. I was told that someone bought four 103-inch plasma display panels at once, and someone else bought one 103-inch to place in the center, and multiple 50-inch screens to place on both sides, so that they could watch different channels at once. I don't know if this happens quite often in the Middle East, or these are rare cases, but I wonder what kind of place these people live in.

The Z series of the "VIERA" line-up is especially popular. Of course its ultra-slim profile is one reason, but its rare silver body (usually "VIERA" TVs are black) is another reason for its popularity.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009This is a big advertising banner for the "VIERA" used in Dubai that I found in entrance to the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The 3 main features mentioned here are "VIERA IMAGE VIEWER," "FULL-TIME FULL HD (refers to the fast moving image response)," and "Made in Japan Panel." People here seem to associate "Made in Japan" with "trust" and "high quality."

Of course the living environment and people's preferences differ from location to location, but it must be quite difficult to create global products that incorporate such variegated needs.

The second day of GITEX 2009 has begun and I have more information about the Panasonic booth!

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

The companions of the Panasonic booth have gathered in front of the main stage. Enrobed in the white uniform, they have a sophisticated ambience about them. Responding politely and presently to the visitors' inquiries in each corner, they not only add glamour to the booth, they are also a very reliable presence.

[Video] The main stage presentation that gives you an overview of Panasonic’s HD products and the enhanced connectivity

Let me introduce the main stage presentation that mesmerizes a large crow every day during the GITEX.

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009
GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

There are 3 103-inch plasma display panels on the main stage and a male and a female dancer appear on stage after a CG countdown image. After a well-coordinated dance performance, Pascal, the MC of the presentation, appears. He is a veteran MC who has had a long relationship with Panasonic; He was the presenter at IFA 2009 held in Germany and at GITEX last year. During the presentation, Pascal introduces Panasonic products, which appear on the plasma display panels one after another, gallantly and with great vigor.

The first Panasonic product that was introduced was the VIERA line-up with Z series, which employs NeoPDP technology, at the pinnacle. Then, the Blu-ray Disc player and the home theater system were introduced with images of a living room with a large screen "VIERA" and the theater system. Then, the digital camera "LUMIX" appeared, mainly represented by the digital interchangeable lens camera, the "G series." Also, the 2 dancers put on a performance with active choreography while shooting each other with camcorders. Of course, Panasonic’s FULL HD 3D technology as well as 3D compatible plasma display panel, 3D compatible Blu-ray Disc player, and active shutter glasses developed based on such technology were also introduced in the presentation.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

With respect to environmental initiatives, the presentation introduced Panasonic’s philosophy, "minimizing the environmental impact of its business activities," which was emphasized by its founder, Konosuke Matsushita, 40 years ago. The presentation also explained how Panasonic has inherited that DNA, which led to the development of technologies that "save energy," "create energy," and "store energy."

The presentation reaches its climax towards the end when the image of Panasonic Toyota Racing team’s F1 racing car sprinting across the circuit synchronizes with the dance performance. It is so exciting, a great round of applause erupts after the presentation finishes. If you watch the presentation first and then have a look around the booth, you'll have a better understanding of the ideas exhibited in the booth.

Photo digest - DLP projector and the broadcasting systems

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

These corners introduce projectors and broadcasting systems for professional use (cameras and switchers from the P2HD series). The projector that can display images in FULL HD reproduce the image in fine detail is on display here, and even in the booth (where it's not completely dark), the images it projected looked crystal clear. In the corner introducing broadcasting systems, you will find cameras for TV broadcasting from the "P2HD" series that can record full HD images on a solid-state memory card, the "P2 card," as well as cameras that may be installed from ceilings and walls and remotely operated using a controller.

Photo digest - Hospital solutions

When you walk around the booth, you will find a corner with quite an unusual atmosphere. This is the hospital solutions corner. The system displayed here uses full HD cameras to let you check video images of a surgery in progress on a large screen. Applying the "HD Visual Communication System," it also lets you send the video to other rooms in the same facility or to remote areas via the Internet. You can transmit live full HD video, and use such footage for research and training in remote locations. You can also record the footage in full HD. There is a mannequin lying down on a bed in this corner and a demonstration of what it would be like to use this system with full HD cameras during a surgery. On the plasma display panel nearby, you can watch recorded footage of an actual surgery. This 65-inch plasma display panel has been especially developed for the medical industry. It has enhanced color reproducibility particularly for the color red. The superb color reproducibility of the plasma display panels is well applauded by people on the ground, who have to make difficult, severe decisions based on what they see on the monitor.

The corner also introduces the MCA (Mobile Clinical Assistant), which has been customized for hospital-use and also takes advantage of the features of "TOUGHBOOK" laptop PCs. Nurses may have to walk around with many case files when they do their rounds, but a single MCA can store all such information, and it is also equipped with a security function using fingerprint identification to prevent access by non-authorized personnel. Moreover, it is resilient against shock and water, and you can also wipe the screen and body down with disinfectant alcohol.

Photo digest - Security and educational solutions

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

There are many businessmen particularly in the security solution corner of the booth. Here, you will find a wide range of surveillance cameras and network cameras as well as a system that lets you monitor images sent from the cameras at once by dividing a large PDP screen into multiple screens. An endless crowd of visitors is listening intently to the explanation of the various solutions. Perhaps the demand for security is increasing here in Dubai since hotels and office buildings are being constructed everywhere in the city.

At the educational solution corner, the "Interactive Panaboard" compatible with wireless LAN that offers a new learning style was on display. It lets you display educational materials stored on a PC. A solution that lets you incorporate video images into classroom activities is also on showcase. You can store various educational video content on a single VOD server, and show them on a plasma display panel in the classroom when needed.

Photo digest - large screen plasma display panel solutions

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

I've described the "LUMIX" and high definition camcorder corner in a previous entry, but the Display Solutions corner is equally appealing. Here you will find a map displayed on the touch-panel function compatible 103-inch plasma display panel. You can drag, zoom in, and scroll by directly touching the panel. This solution is being offered as an interactive signage for shopping malls, digital catalogs for stores, etc. It is a great feeling to be able to operate such a large screen with your fingertips. What also took me by surprise was the air hockey installation using the 103-inch plasma display panel.

Also, there is a unique, participatory exhibition that lets you share your own eco activities on the display. You write down your eco activities on a card, and the scanner scans them before showing them on the display.

This corner that resembles a room of about approximately 20 square meters with a sofa lets you experience the 7.1ch surround sound while watching a Blu-ray Disc software. On the right and left sides of the entrance, you can find packages of Blu-ray Disc movies available in the market.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

The "LUMIX" and high definition camcorder corner has one of the most unique exhibitions in the Panasonic booth. As I mentioned in my previous entry, you will find a number of attractive exhibits in this corner including a display that has been elaborately (perhaps excessively) decorated and a replica of a F1 racing car. Yes, the big covered object I found in the booth yesterday is a replica of the Panasonic Toyota Racing team's F1 racing car. Here, a presentation by an MC and a models (race queens) is being held.

Photo digest - FULL HD 3D THEATER

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

I mentioned how it seemed as though visitors are taking their time coming to the venue today and so the exhibition is relatively uncongested, but this corner, where you will find the FULL HD 3D system, is different. The screening in the theater takes place at predetermined times, so when it gets crowded numbered tickets for the next screening will be distributed. Even though there is a line in front of the theater today, it looks like you will be able to get in and watch the next screening without waiting too long. I'd also like to go and see it for myself.

Photo digest - NeoPDP (150-inch plasma display panel and the Z series)

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Behind the line-up of the "VIERA" I introduced earlier, you will find a showcase on the NeoPDP technology, where you will see the 150-inch plasma display as well as the "VIERA" Z series, which are only 1-inch thick. When the image of the train heading towards the front of the large screen of the 150-inch was displayed, many visitors seemed to be stunned by the imagery, and stayed frozen to watch intently. And the "VIERA" Z series were displayed on a turntable, so that you could see how thin it really is. Some people checked to see how thin they were with their own hands, and seemed to be very surprised with its thinness.

Photo digest (Let me introduce the Panasonic booth!)- Main stage presentation

Today, being the first day of the exhibition, I would like to introduce the various corners of the Panasonic booth with photographs.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

Let's start with the main stage presentation.

On the main stage, a presentation is being held, which introduces Panasonic's products and technologies exhibited in the Panasonic booth at GITEX 2009, and its message regarding the global environment. The presentation involves 3 103-inch plasma display panels and is conducted gallantly by a male MC. A male and female dancer put on an acrobatic performance on stage too, creating a great show. It is a must-see!

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

October 18th, 1:00pm (local time) - the GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009 has just begun! The morning was set aside for the government's VIP guests, so the exhibition has opened its doors to the public in the afternoon. Starting tomorrow the exhibition will be open to the public from 10:00am. The skies are sunny in Dubai today, so we don't have to worry about bad weather. According to the weather forecast, the daily high temperature will be around 35 degrees Celsius, so the 5 days of the exhibition has started on a very hot note. The construction of the hall that I had been worried about is complete, too!

Click on the image to watch the video. And click here for a closer look at the still photograph.

While I was doing research in the FULL HD 3D THEATER this morning, I saw the VIP government guests taking the tour of the Panasonic booth. There were a total of about 200 people, including the guests, attendees, security guards, and press, so it was quite a spectacle. They went into the FULL HD 3D THEATER to experience the FULL HD 3D imagery.
GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009Officially, the public days off are Fridays and Saturdays (as of September, 2006). The exhibition started today on a Sunday, and that's like a Monday in Japan or many Western cultures. This may be why, but the public seemed to be having a slow start coming to the exhibition; there seem to be more businessmen-like people in the booths for the time being. The exhibition has just begun, so I am sure more and more people will be coming later in the day. Later on, I will give you a brief overview of the various must-see areas such as the FULL HD 3D, "VIERA," and "LUMIX" corners in the photo digest entries.

The must-see exhibits of the Panasonic booth at GITEX 2009!

I went and took a look around the Panasonic booth, where people are working hard trying to get everything set up for the tomorrow's opening day. There are many must-see ideas on exhibit in the Panasonic booth here at GITEX 2009, so let me introduce some of these to you briefly.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

[ FULL HD 3D once again in Dubai! ]
The FULL HD 3D system was much talked about at IFA 2009 and CEATEC JAPAN 2009, but it is a key exhibit here at GITEX 2009, too. The more I look at the theater walls - the design of which were inspired by Alpine skiing and F1 - the more my hopes and expectations for tomorrow's theater showcase rise.

[ An even more active,
powerful main stage presentation ]

There are great expectations for the performance that takes place on the main stage at each exhibition; each time it is very variegated. The rehearsal reminded me of the story told on the IFA 2009 stage, but very GITEX-like characteristics have also been added. There are dancers that move all around the stage, and the presentation seems to have become even more active and energetic than the one at IFA. The people working on the hall construction near the stage also stopped to take a look at the rehearsal. I wonder if they can afford to do so, since time is of the essence, but I am sure they will get their job done!

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009
GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

[ System solutions ]
Another feature of the Panasonic booth at GITEX is that there is a corner that introduces system solutions, including those for offices, classrooms, and security devices. The focus here is not on home electronics. Rather, you will find professional devices that you normally would not get to see in ordinary electronics stores. Perhaps there is a great focus on business related products such as office equipment and security devices since there is a lot of building construction underway in Dubai. I wonder what solutions Panasonic will offer at this year's GITEX as an answer to the local people's needs.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009I found a large object covered by a big cloth in the shooting corner for the "LUMIX" and camcorders! Hardly any staff dared to go near it while the booth preparations were underway, so I am guessing it is an extremely valuable piece that will be on showcase. I am sure you can guess what it might be.
GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009And lastly, in the corner introducing the functions of high definition camcorders, there is a unique display decorated with various objects, which include a real oil painting, golden lamp, and a treasure box. It is such an intriguing, elaborate display, I wondered if these objects are really going to be used to introduce the functions the HD camcorders come with. Such a fun, playful way of demonstrating the functions is perhaps unique to exhibitions, and is one reason that makes them so interesting.

The exhibition will begin tomorrow. Will the venue be ready in time?!

After having breakfast at the hotel, I made my way over the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre where the GITEX 2009 will be held starting tomorrow. People in the Panasonic booth as well as in many other areas of the venue are working at full speed in preparation for tomorrow's opening day.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

It's not only the booths that are humming with activity. The Panasonic booth will be located in the "Consumer Electronics" area this year, which can be found in the "Sheikh Saeed Halls." Last year, the area where the "Sheikh Saeed Halls" are located was used for parking, but because the scale of the exhibition has expanded, a new hall has been constructed here. It's past noon now, but watching people at work putting the hall together, it's hard to believe that the exhibition will begin tomorrow.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

There are construction materials and vehicles in front of the hall. Along the side walls construction is underway putting in glass doors and walls. Near the halls, there are blocks being laid down and wiring construction is in progress. I am getting a bit worried that things may not be ready in time for tomorrow, but when I asked the local Panasonic staff they said, "You should have been here yesterday. But they've finished a lot of the work that needed to be done now." So, it seems things will be in order by tomorrow. Preparations in the Panasonic booth, as well as in the booths of other companies, are steadily underway so don't worry!

After travelling 8,500km, I've arrived in Dubai!

After spending approximately 11 hours on a plane and travelling nearly 8,500km, I've arrived in Dubai at 5:00am local time! I left Japan last night and since I arrived in Dubai early in the morning, I'm not phased by the time difference yet, but since it has been 11 hours since I left Japan, I may get jetlagged later on.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

I arrived at the Dubai International Airport. The terminal I was in was still quite new. The shiny columns and ceiling and the glass walls were very beautiful. According to the other staff who went to GITEX last year the large LED screens I saw at the airport are new. The entrance to the airport is still under construction, so more improvements are still underway at the airport. This airport is open 24 hours, so even though we got in really early, there were many travelers at the airport.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

I'm writing this entry at the hotel now, but on the way to the hotel, I saw many skyscrapers from my taxi window. A 5-lane highway runs through this central area flanked by glass buildings on both sides. All these buildings have a very unique architecture. It seemed as though these buildings are all competing with one another with their unique designs.

I will be heading to the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (where the GITEX 2009 will be held) later on today, so my work here will begin momentarily!

By the way, from this entry forward, the time displayed will be the local time in Dubai.

Heading to Dubai tonight!

Tonight I head off to Dubai where the GITEX will be held. I haven't finished packing yet, but I looked up information on Dubai, so I'd like to share some of it with you.

Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It's often talked about in newspapers and on TV. Although it produces oil, in comparison to its neighbor countries, the amount of oil it produces is much lower, so Dubai has promoted development of the city as a center of business, finance, and tourism, which has resulted in its current rapid economic growth. Hence, its level of recognition is higher than Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE.

It will take 11 hours from Japan to Dubai on a direct flight. I had assumed that since Dubai is closer than Germany, where I reported on IFA 2009, it would take much less time, but Germany is 12 hours away, so there is only a 1 hour difference.

The local climate is hot. I looked up the weather in Dubai on the Internet, but Dubai in the fall time still records high temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius. It's quite similar to the hot summers in Japan. What's more, it's supposed to be more humid than here. I can't cope with the summer heat very well, so I am a little worried. But public facilities are nearly all equipped with air conditioning, so I hope to stay indoors as much as possible (haha).

In September it was announced that the metro is now up and running. It was built to alleviate the traffic jam that went hand in hand with the increase in the population in Dubai. Since my hotel and the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre where the GITEX will be held is connected by the metro, I am looking forward to taking it to and from the convention center.

GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009

There are many other sights I will only be able to see in Dubai such as the skyscrapers still being constructed and resorts, which are popular vacation spots for celebrities. I am very excited about what I will see there. Wish me luck!

GITEX 2009 is the largest exhibition on information, communications, and AV in the Middle East

GITEX 2009, which celebrates its 29th anniversary this year, will be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from October 18th to 22nd. This exhibition is officially known as the "GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK" and is comprised of 4 exhibitions, the "GITEX Business Solutions" that covers all aspects of IT, the "GULFCOMMS" where communications devices are showcased, and the "MEFX," which showcases technologies relevant to the banking and finance industry, and the "Consumer Electronics" exhibition where the Panasonic booth will be located. The importance of GITEX as an exhibition for latest technologies and businesses is evident from these 4 exhibitions on IT, communications, home electronics and banking and finance technologies being held at the same time.

According to the show report on the "GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2008" available for download on the GITEX official website, last year 129,844 people from 157 countries visited, and 3,361 companies from 83 countries took part. So it is an exhibition that attracts many people and companies from the Middle East and many other parts of the world.

Looking back at mino-san's entries from last year, it seems like there will not only be digital home electronics such as "VIERA" or "LUMIX," but also devices great for the office, education, and security on exhibit, so I can't wait to see what will be exhibited at the Panasonic booth this year.

News on TV and the papers talk about how the economic crisis that began in the United States last fall has affected Dubai as well; major banks and investment funds withdrew their investment, the bubble burst, and economic development screeched to a halt. However, in comparison to the effect that the economic crisis has had in the US and Europe, the new metro system is now up and running, and the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, where the GITEX will be held, has just added another exhibition hall, so it doesn't seem like the state of the economy has had too much effect on Dubai and GITEX. It has been a year since the bubble burst, but perhaps the economy in the Middle East on the way to recovery.

Will the GITEX be able to shrug off the burst bubble and draw great attention? What new ideas will be showcased at the Panasonic booth? I will be going to Dubai with such hopes and expectations, and I will try my best to give you live update from the GITEX exhibition booth.

The GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009 will begin soon!

Hi! I'm hiroyuki, one of the writers for the Cyber Showcase Blog. Great job covering CEATEC JAPAN mino-san!

There are many exhibitions in the months of September and October, and so although we are still enjoying the afterglow of CEATEC the GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2009 will begin on October 18th. I will be flying to Dubai to report on this exhibition. It's my second time reporting about an exhibition for this blog (first time was on IFA 2009). And as it was my first time in Berlin, this will also be my first time in Dubai, but I hope to fight off the heat and upload hot new information in a timely manner, so please stay tuned!
